ESGLD Wokshops: History and Background

ESGLD workshops are a cornerstone of European lysosomal disease research networking, bringing together basic scientists, clinical researchers, and trainees every two years for intensive, collaborative scientific exchange. They have been held across Europe (and virtually when needed), covering both fundamental biology and translational research in lysosomal storage diseases.

ESGLD workshops are biennial scientific meetings designed to:

  • showcase mostly unpublished research selected from submitted abstracts,
  • foster direct interaction and collaboration between researchers and clinicians, and provide opportunities for young investigators to present their work (with prizes awarded).
  • These informal yet scientifically rich meetings usually occur in September/Octover every two years across different European countries.
  • Sessions built from submitted abstracts rather than invited talks, ensuring cutting-edge content.
  • Encouragement of interaction and open discussion among participants.
  • Prizes for outstanding presentations and flash talks to support early-career researchers.

Many workshops include a graduate course aimed at trainees in lysosomal biology and disease research

25th ESGLD Workshop— Berlin, Germany (5–7 June 2024)

  • “New insight into the pathophysiology of lysosome-related diseases”
  • Combined with Meeting on Lysosomes& Autophagy

24th ESGLD Workshop & Graduate Course — Lancaster, UK (7–11 Sept 2022)

    • Combined Graduate Course (2 days) + main workshop sessions.
    • Covered fundamental lysosome biology, disease mechanisms, and therapies — including autophagy, membrane proteins, and clinical approaches.
    • Graduate course featured lectures from leading experts and flash-talk sessions by trainees

23rd ESGLD Virtual Summer Meeting — Online (28–30 June 2021)
