Board Member Secretary

Nicolina Cristina Sorrentino

Nicolina Cristina Sorrentino is Assistant Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, University of Naples “Federico II”, and an independent investigator at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM), where she serves as Head of the Advanced Histopathology Facility. Her research focuses on neurodegeneration and the development of gene- and drug-based therapies for severe inherited central nervous system disorders, with particular emphasis on mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS types I, II, and IIIA). Her work integrates translational neuroscience, advanced histopathology, and preclinical gene therapy, including extensive experience with both small and large animal models. She has contributed to pioneering AAV-based gene therapy strategies for MPS-IIIA and to the development of engineered lysosomal enzymes capable of crossing the blood–brain barrier. Dr. Sorrentino has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, holds patents on therapeutic approaches, and has secured competitive funding from national and international agencies, including PNRR, Telethon, the MPS Society, and the Orphan Disease Foundation. She is actively involved in graduate and medical education and serves as a Board Member of the European Study Group on Lysosomal Diseases (ESGLD).
